Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science (0478)

We worked with teachers and subject experts to update this syllabus as part of our ongoing review process.

We have updated this syllabus to focus on practical, real‑world programming, removing pseudocode and using Python 3 as the only language for teaching, assessment and programming questions.

Paper 1 Computer systems and logic

• We have introduced modern computing topics, including quantum computing and networking concepts such as IP addressing and cloud computing.
• We have also expanded content on AI, machine learning and ethical considerations.

Paper 2 Algorithms and programming

• Has a stronger focus on practical coding and real‑world application.
• We have replaced the scenario‑based question with a redesigned structured question, with increasing levels of challenge and a points‑based mark scheme.
• We have removed references to the program development life cycle and pseudocode to focus on practical programming.
• Calculators are now allowed.

Digital examination

• We have introduced a digital‑only exam route (0265). With an IDE, students can compile, debug, and run code, showcasing their practical programming skills instead of writing code by hand. We continue to offer paper based routes, so you can choose the option that best suits your students.
